Joint Chiefs chairman: close Guantanamo

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.
"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.
Let's ask the Republican candidates what they think.
McCain: Close Guantanamo Bay(18 May 2007)
... Huckabee joined Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in declaring his opposition to the interrogation procedure known as "waterboarding," and said he would support closing the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a contrast with the other leading Republicans.(4 Dec 2007)
"Touching on the challenge of defending against terrorism, Romney said he supported tough interrogation of captured militants at the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp."...(29 Jul 2007)
Not nearly as disconnected from reality as I would have guessed... except for Mitt!
[note: I tried to find most recent discussion of Guantanamo from each of the three top Republicans... apparently this issue has not been at the top of anyone's list - including debate moderators. The dates reported are the most recent I found via Google. Romney's campaign website is the only one that produced a hit via local 'search'.]
